I would like to preface that this is my take on the new format and there has not been a full tournament finish at the time of writing this article.
This season of College Football is the first year of the 12-team playoff which will feature the winners of the 4 power conferences the SEC, B1G, BIG 12, and ACC, and a group of 5 FBS conference winners. The top 4 highest ranked conference winners get a bye to the second round and the remaining 7 spots are filled by teams selected by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee made up of athletic directors of one school from the Power 4 conferences and former coaches, player, athletic directors and administrators along with retired media members. This committee decides the 12 teams that make the playoffs and for the most part, it is based on the AP Poll rankings but the committee has discretion with who gets in.
With this new playoff format, there are more teams which reduces the chances of top teams getting snubbed such as the 13-0, ACC Champion Florida State Seminole, which did not make the playoffs last year even though they were undefeated Power 5 conference champions like Michigan and UW was. This led to lots of controversy and calls for the 12-team format to be in place last season. However, as has been seen so far this playoff, the new format has been a disaster. In the first 8 games only a single one-score game, which was the 2 overtime thriller between the Texas Longhorns and Arizona State Sun Devils. The rest have been blowouts because of the difference in level, especially in the 1st round between Ohio State and Tennessee which Ohio State won by 25, 42-17. These extra games are just money grabs for networks and promote more mediocrity in the CFP which has been a prestigious tournament of the top 4 teams in the nation since its creation in 2013.
However, there are many ways to fix this tournament to make it work for 12 teams. Instead of giving the bye to the 4 highest ranked conference champions, give it to the 4 highest ranked teams to reward them for winning and being the strongest teams to face. This year ranks 1, 2, 9, and 12 got the bye versus ranks 1, 2, 3, and 4. Keeping the system the way it is gives nothing to the ranking system because The SEC and B1G are the 2 top conferences in college football while the ACC and BIG 12 are known as less strong. Additionally, hosting round 2 at the home team field versus at an off-campus venue would give the team a bye home field advantage and give back more to the college as a reward through ticket sales and boosting the local economy. I think with these two simple changes to the new 12-team college football playoff system it will drastically improve it for the fans, players, and colleges.
