Have you ever been so mad at your lunch schedule that you staged a walkout and stormed the district office? Well, in Seattle, students did just that. On September 6, 2025, students of the Seattle School District walked out of their classes at noon. This was done to protest their new lunch schedule, in which they had their one-hour lunch period split into two 30-minute lunch periods. The outrage seemed to spark at the inability to be able to participate in clubs during lunch, as well as being unable to get help from teachers within this timeframe. This caused students to organize a walkout in which they went straight to the district office to protest outside the building
The district has given a statement saying that they respect the student voice, but will be keeping the lunch schedule the same. Although they refused to change the lunch schedule back, some schools made slight changes to try and give students time for their clubs. A student at West Seattle High School (WSHS) let me know that they incorporated an advisory period on Friday mornings to give students time to participate in clubs. Assuming it is too late in the year to change the schedule back, hopefully, schools will instead follow suit with WSHS and develop accommodations for their students.
