Do you like Superman? Do you like anime? Do you want to watch a Superman anime? Well this is probably not exactly what you are looking for, but if watching a Superman show inspired by anime is good enough for you, then I’ve got a show for you! My Adventures with Superman is an American animated superhero show that was developed by Jake Wyatt and produced by Warner Bros. Animation, first premiering on July 7th, 2023 on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. I am certain almost everyone knows about Superman, especially with the movie about him last year. I remember discovering this series during a vacation with my family, and with the show’s third season coming eventually, I decided I should check out the whole series! With that being said, let’s go through with the show’s first episode — which is part of a two parter but I will only cover the first part for this article.
So this one episode is titled “Adventures of a Normal Man”, with it opening on a young Clark Kent who is beginning to awaken some of his powers, those being flight and super-strength, which he uses to save a woman and her baby from a car accident. The episode then skips ahead to an adult Clark who is now in Metropolis with his roommate Jimmy Olseon, a photographer and conspiracy theorist. The scene then continuously cuts between them, who are preparing for their first day as interns for the Daily Planet, and Lois Lane, who is a senior intern there. The Planet’s editor-in-chief Perry White assigns the two to Lois, and she deceives the two into helping her investigate a military-grade technology theft. The trio get a lead from Flip Johnson and her teenage vigilante group known as the Newskid Legion, eventually leading them to finding the thieves loading military robots at the docks. They get spotted by the thieves’ leader, Leslie Willis, who unleashes one of the robots to attack them. Clark puts on a disguise before destroying the robot, leading to Willis activating the rest of the robots to attack him. With help from Lois, Clark manages to defeat the remaining robots and the trio head back to report the story to Perry. However, Perry refuses to post the story due to Jimmy’s pictures being blurry and thus not having any real proof of the new superhero, which Lois decides to call “Superman”. Despite this, the three become friends and Lois invites Clark and Jimmy to help her get an interview with Superman, setting up for the next episode.
All in all, this was a really enjoyable introduction episode for this show! The anime-inspired art style and animation is appealing to the eyes, the characters and their interactions with each other are quite charming, and the story they set up so far makes me want to watch more! I am not able to properly replicate these with just a simple summary, so I would definitely recommend you check out this episode, and the show overall, for yourself! You can watch the show on subscriptions such as Hulu or Apple TV, or through clips on YouTube!
