The global girl group known as KATSEYE, debuting in 2023, has never held as much pop-culture relevance as they do today: their billboard-charting EP Beautiful Chaos producing hit songs such as Gnarly and Gabriela; their respective dance trends also taking over social media. And most recently, was nominated with two Grammys in best new artist and best pop duo/group performance categories.
KATSEYE was formed by HYPE and Geffen Records through the survival show The Debut: Dream Academy, narrowing down over 120,000 applicants to just 20 contestants, all fighting for one of the six final spots. The project aimed to create a global girl group utilizing the K-pop formula.
The final lineup ended up as follows: Manon, of Swiss-Italian and Ghanaian descent, aged 22; Sophia, of Filipino descent, aged 22; Daniela, of Venezuelan and Cuban descent, aged 20; Megan, of Singaporean-Chinese descent, aged 19; Lara, of Indian descent, aged 19; and Yoonchae, of South Korean descent, aged 17.
Although KATSEYE’s initial projects were much more contained within the traditional K-pop mold the industry has defined—softer makeup, preppier clothing, etc.—viewers have spotted a noticeable shift in their presentation. Their aesthetic has gone and leaned closer to western ideals, but it’s not only about physical appearance. The members are not as pressured to abide by South Korean social norms, which are still relatively conservative, like K-pop idols are. First off, both Lara and Megan are openly queer. These identities have been historically suppressed by the industry, most notably in groups compared to soloists. Though this is slowly changing, as evident by newly debuted boy group XLOV, it is still fairly rare to witness queerness not being utilized as a tool for shallow fanservice, but instead representation in the context of social acceptance in a K-pop group. They are also not subject to some of the unreasonably rigorous training schedules and unhealthy and oftentimes downright dangerous diets that the K-pop industry has normalized.
All of this is to say that KATSEYE is redefining the modern girl group. For a long time, there had not been many prominent girl groups in the west like there were in the 2000s and early 2010s. And to this degree of diversity among ethnicity, background, skin color, and even language depicted in their songs, KATSEYE embodies more than just their music: they act as role models for a new generation of young girls who perhaps haven’t seen themselves reflected in the entertainment industry. KATSEYE itself is an embodiment of cultural diversity and celebration of individuality.
Recently, KATSEYE has gained noteworthy attention due to its multiple ongoing collaborations. These include its viral collab with GAP, Monster High, and Jollibee, many of which garnered widespread applause for its demonstration of unapologetic authenticity. Within these ads, they were not only able to highlight the charm of their group as a whole, but also shine a spotlight on each individual member. For example, in the Monster High collab, each member represented a different mythology from their culture: Megan represented a “Huli Jing,” a Chinese fox spirit; Laura represented a “Rock Shasa,” a type of demon from hindu mythology; Sophia’s look is inspired by a “manananggal” which is a vampire like creature from Filipino folklore; Manon’s look is inspired by several different creatures but all revolving around sea monster legends; Yoonchae depicts the look of a “jang son,” a white furry beast from Korean mythology; and, last but not least, Daniela’s look is portrayed as a werewolf, which nods to different shapeshifting mythology in the Caribbean. This is just another way that KATSEYE was able to celebrate multiple unique cultural heritages.
Although KATSEYE is still in the process of developing a more personalized music identity, KATSEYE breaks barriers by blending aspects of the established K-pop groundwork with a western approach, promoting cultural collision, and crushing the expectation of stars possessing a pre-packaged persona and image. With its immense success, perhaps KATSEYE has laid the groundwork for a new route in the entertainment industry as a whole. But only time will tell.
