Do you like looking at blue cats, pink bunnies, and/or a singular orange fish? Were you ever a child between the years 2011 to 2019? Do you remember watching that neat Cartoon Network animated sitcom created by Ben Bocquelet, known as The Amazing World of Gumball? Did you know it got a revival back in July 2025, titled The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball? Either way, no matter if you watched either show or not, with the revival’s third season releasing in May of this year, I suppose now is as good a time as any to actually begin watching The Amazing World of Gumball. So where better to start than going through the show’s first episode together, first released on May 3, 2011!
So the episode is titled “The DVD,” opening with Gumball the blue cat watching TV when his mom, Nicole, comes and requests him to return the titular DVD today before they get a fine. Gumball finds the DVD with his brother Darwin, the orange fish, in the kitchen which leads to a series of comical events that end with the DVD being destroyed after being used as a pizza cutter, then scratched up by the wrong side of a sponge, and then shredded up by the waste disposal in the sink. Gumball and Darwin attempt to replace the DVD without their mom finding out with a cardboard one, which fails to trick Larry, the DVD store employee. The duo then decide the best course of action now is to raise money to pay off their debt, first through begging and later through a job for make-up testing. However, they are unable to get enough money to pay off their debts before Nicole finds out, causing them to focus on making a homemade version of the destroyed DVD before running to the DVD store while getting chased across the neighborhood by their mother. They manage to lose her and get to the store, trying to pass off their homemade DVD for the real one which fails. Nicole catches up to them but calms down after finding out it was only a twenty-five dollar fee, going to pay it off and telling the boys that she still loves them no matter what they do. The episode then ends with a freeze frame of the three running away from Larry after Nicole finds out about the seven hundred dollar late fee.
Overall, that was a charming and quite funny introduction to this series. I found the show’s art style to be unique and appealing, from its character designs to its realistic background, and the comedy got a chuckle or two out of me. I can not do this show justice through a basic summary, so I highly recommend you check out this show for yourself if you have never watched it before like me! Unlike most shows I have previously reviewed, this series has no easy and free way to watch full episodes of it, as the full series is only accessible through streaming services such as Apple TV, and the revival series can only be found on Hulu. However, you can find several clips of the show on the Amazing World of Gumball YouTube Channel! So, despite this potential obstacle, this show is definitely worth checking out!
