Contacting Legislators

Levi Gettleman, A&E Editor

With the many problems facing our community, state, and nation, it is time to make your voice heard. Thankfully, we have put together a handy-dandy guide to civic advocacy.

First of all, know what you want and why. Look into some of the current state bills at Leg.wa.gov under the “Current Bills” tab where you can browse bills by topic or date. At Congress.gov, you can search federal bills by topic or key phrase.

Once you have your issue chosen and researched, figure out who you want to contact. On Leg.wa.gov, you can just select “Find Your District” and after entering your address, you can see your state and federal senators and representatives.

If you are looking to speak to someone about a national issue, call 202-224-3121 to be connected with your legislator. If you are reaching out to state government, call 1800-562-6000,  although remember that the state legislature is only in session January to May next year.

On the phone, begin by asking for the office of your senator or representative. After you are connected, give your name and explain that you are a constituent and a student. From there, explain that you are calling to urge the senator/representative to take action on a specific bill or issue.

Don’t forget to explain the importance of the issue for not only the state/nation but also for you. After that, you will be asked to provide your address and can request a response. Don’t forget to thank the person for their time!

If the idea of a phone call is daunting, you can contact your state legislators via email on the Leg.wa.gov webpage.
