Do you like preschool mathematics? Do you desire to learn preschool math via music? Do you want to watch a trio of tiny superheroes solve problems around a city with the power of preschool math? If you wish to learn preschool math or make someone else learn preschool math, then Team Umizoomi is the kid’s show for you! Team Umizoomi is an American musical preschool children’s show with live-action and animated elements, created by Soo Kim, Michael T. Smith, and Jennifer Twomey. Teri Weiss developed it for Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. Channel.
Team Umizoomi revolves around three main characters. There’s Milli, a six-year-old girl with pattern and measurement-related abilities. She usually leads the team throughout their missions, using her pattern ability to solve problems (she also knows martial arts in later seasons). Next up is Geo, Milli’s brother, who has shape-related powers thanks to his shape belt. Geo can create any shape needed to solve certain problems with his belt. In later seasons, he is given a longsword called the Shape Splitter, allowing him to cut shapes into different forms, and a horseshoe magnet is labeled the shape magnet, which he uses like a grappling hook. Finally, there is Bot, the kids’ primary caretaker. He is a green robot with extendable limbs, a screen on his belly, and multiple retractable tools. Additionally, there is the UmiCar, a car that drives the team to wherever they need to go.
Episodes follow the team of three using their “Mighty Math Powers” to solve problems that pop up in or around UmiCity, such as searching for pieces of a kite or stopping the occasional villain like the Shape Bandit. As a musical, the series includes multiple catchy songs to sing along with or listen to by themselves, such as the theme song that begins each episode. At the end of each episode, the trio performs the Crazy Shake, or Umi Shake in Season 1, which is a funny victory song and dance to mark a successful mission for Team Umizoomi.
Team Umizoomi is an enjoyable show with a neat premise. Premiering on January 25, 2010, and ending on April 24, 2015, the series has 77 episodes spread evenly across 4 seasons. The show has preschool math kits, nooks, and DVD releases, and you can still find their episodes on streaming services like Paramount, or just discover random video clips on YouTube. Either way, if you want to watch an animated, live-action musical that teaches you basic preschool math, here you go!
