Are you an aspiring figure skater? Have you considered joining the Evergreen High School Skating team? School administration has played no role in the operation of our team; it is solely created and managed by students from the greater Seattle area! Currently, members come from high schools by the name of Bothell, Edmonds-Woodway, Kamiak, Nathan Hale, North Creek, Lake Washington, Lakeside, Ballard, and Mountlake Terrace.
Helen Xia, one of the founders of the team who attends Bothell, explained how she aimed to create a more welcoming and accepting environment based on her past experiences. She states, “In general, figure skating is an extremely isolating sport,” [which] “makes it difficult for skaters, especially beginners, to feel connected or supported on ice.” Her plan for the “2024-2025 season is to create accessible opportunities for skaters to compete and practice. [They] aim to make figure skating more enjoyable for everyone, from competitive members of the national team to skaters who have just begun taking lessons.”
We meet every Friday at the Olympic Ice Arena. Practice begins at 4:30 PM and can end at 5:00 PM or 5:30 PM, depending on the availability of the ice on that particular day. Note that these practices are not similar to public sessions you might have engaged in before because skate rentals are not available. It is also common for the team to take an off-ice strength and conditioning class afterward costing from $10 to $15, depending on the status as a Seattle Skating Club (SSC) member. (Not our team!)
As the winter months close in, I ask you to strongly consider joining. If you are interested, contact us at @evergreenskating or @520.hln via Instagram.
