Reviewing (Probably Obscure) Kid Shows: Wild Kratts

Do you like wild animals? Do you wanna watch a kids’ show about said wild animals? Do you want said kids’ show to include two brothers who use power suits to gain the attributes of said wild animals? Do you have a younger sibling who wants to watch a show like that? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then I have a good show for you! Wild Kratts is a comedic educational children’s television show that was a personal favorite of mine. It is a show produced by the Kratt Brothers Company and 9 Story Media Group that teaches children about the creatures making up the varied animal kingdom. The Kratt brothers, Chris and Martin, have also created the shows Kratt’s Creatures, Zoboomafoo, and Be the Creature. Wild Kratts uses a combination of Flash animation and live-action, with the live-action parts at the start and end of episodes and the Flash animation sections taking up the majority of episodes.

Wild Kratts follows the animated versions of the Kratt brothers who are supported by Aviva Corcovado, the bioengineer, who invents equipment for the Kratt brothers to use; Koki, the mechanical engineer, who maintains their flying turtle ship, the Tortuga; and Jimmy Z, who pilots the Tortuga, operates a teleporter that sends equipment to the Kratt brothers and helps Aviva with her inventions. Together they travel around the world, studying wild animals and usually having to rescue the animal due to a baby animal’s mistake, general human influence, or a villain capturing them. Villains include Zachary Varmitech, who is a robotic inventor and tries to control animals to act as workers or be sold; Gaston Gourmand, who is a gourmet chef and uses wild animals, usually rare and endangered ones, in his dishes; and Donita Donata, who is a fashion designer and tries to use live animals as jewelry or clothing. The villains, Gaston and Dontia specifically, symbolize real-life chefs and fashion designers who use wild animals in their products.

A big focus of the show is the “creature powers” that animals have. They emphasize this by introducing the “Creature Power Suits,” an invention of Aviva. The suits allow humans to mimic animal abilities using Creature Power Discs, which contain the information needed to transform. When activated, the suits generate a form based on the information from the disc. This can include giving the user falcon wings to fly with, granting the user fish gills to breathe in the ocean, and much more. The Kratt brothers use these suits to help with animal studies and defeating the villains.

Overall, Wild Kratts is a great kids’ show. It has an interesting concept and teaches children about animals in a fun series. Wild Kratts is still going strong, now in its seventh season with no end in sight. It’s an enjoyable show for kids I recommend and wish I could talk more about.
