This summer, moviegoing will be in full swing with multiple blockbuster movies. Quite a few familiar faces are returning to the big screen. Here is a quick look at the biggest movies coming to theaters this summer.
Despicable Me 4
Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig as Gru and Lucy respectively are returning for the new film. Chris Renaud is returning to direct the film, after having directed Despicable Me (2010) and Despicable Me 2 (2013). Pharrell Williams and Heitor Pereira are once again returning to score the film, after doing so on the previous three films. The film will follow Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith, and Agnes as they welcome baby Gru Jr. to the family. Shortly after, things turn when supervillain Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) seeks revenge on Gru and his family. Forced to go on the run, Gru must protect his family while fighting his new nemesis. The film surely includes more Minion Mayhem and lots of butt-kicking throughout. Despicable Me 4 hits theaters on July 2nd, 2024.
Twisters
In 1996 Twister hit theaters and became the 2nd highest-grossing film that year, pulling in nearly $500 million worldwide. The original film starred an ensemble cast including Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. A follow-up to the original 1996 film began development in 2020. Filming took place in Oklahoma throughout 2023. The film is not a remake but rather a standalone sequel set 30 years after the events of Twister (1996). The film stars Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Daisy Edgar Jones, and Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of The Beasts). It is unknown if anyone from the original film is returning, though there is speculation that Helen Hunt will appear in the movie. The film follows a new generation of storm chasers encountering a new weather threat ignited by climate change. Twisters hits theaters on July 19th, 2024.
Alien: Romulus
The Alien franchise has drifted in and out of pop culture over the years. The first two films Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) directed by Ridley Scott and James Cameron respectively, were met with critical acclaim and are considered some of the greatest films ever made. After the original 1979 to 1997 quadrilogy starring Sigourney Weaver (Ghostbusters, Avatar) ended, the franchise went a different direction with two prequel films titled Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017). A Covenant follow-up remains adrift in space, and in 2022 a new stand-alone film was announced. Fede Álvarez directs with Ridley Scott producing.
The new film, titled Alien Romulus, takes place between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). The story follows a group of young space colonists who come face to face with the most despicable and horrifying life forms in the universe. Alien: Romulus chest-bursts into theaters August 16th.
So if you are looking forward to those movies, head to theaters this summer to experience them on the big screen.
