Want to watch—or have a younger sibling watch—a children’s show about an inquisitive tailless monkey accompanied by a lad with a yellow hat living in a city? If somehow yes, then here is a show called Curious George. Curious George is a kid’s show based on the popular children’s books of the same name written by Margret and H.A. Rey and illustrated by Alan Shalleck. The 2006 TV show premiered on PBS Kids, originally ending after nine seasons, then returning in 2018 and ending after fifteen seasons on the streaming service Peacock.
Curious George follows George the Monkey and his caretaker, the Man with the Yellow Hat, who got the name “Ted Shackelford” from the animated films. Taking place mainly in a city, the show has two animated segments and—before Season 10—a live-action section after the segment’s episode. Episodes usually have George discover a concept like the number zero or how to make certain foods, maybe cause unintentional problems, and learn a lesson from another character—primarily from the Man with the Yellow Hat. The live-action section shows and explains concepts of math and science found in the episode. The two main characters, George and Ted, play the roles of a teachable character and a mentor, respectively. George is an enjoyable character that children can learn from and Ted is a good teacher who primarily teaches George things.
Curious George is an odd series. It has over 200 books, 2 TV shows with hundreds of episodes, and 6 movies with the most recent one being released in 2021. Its episodes can be found on YouTube and can be a nice show to entertain your preschool siblings if you have them. You probably won’t watch the show unless you have nostalgia for it, but it’s a good show for what it is. Overall, it was a pretty nice preschooler show.
