The Spring season has officially started… (A bit late to the party as the spring sports have already been in session since winter!) But this doesn’t mean we don’t look forward to the amazing year ahead of us in spring sports. This year, there are several exciting sports, with this season having the most teams at 14, both boys and girls. This includes, for the boys: baseball, rowing, track & field, unified soccer, and lacrosse, and for the girls: badminton, rowing, golf, softball, tennis, track & field, unified soccer, and water polo. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most popular spring sports.
Soccer: Soccer is one of the most popular sports worldwide and is known as arguably the greatest sport ever, so obviously, Bothell High will be having this sport. Coached by Scott Meschke, soccer teams play on a field that is 100 yards long and 50 yards wide, with two goals at each end. The object of the game is to score more goals than the opposing team by kicking a ball into the opposing team’s goal.
Baseball: Baseball is another popular sport that is played in the spring season. It is a game played with a bat, ball, and gloves between two teams of nine players each. The objective of the game is to score runs by hitting the ball and running around the bases. Coached by Kent Schaefer, the baseball practices happen at a field that many students in Bothell haven’t even seen. The baseball team recently played off in a WIAA Foundation exhibition game that went awesomely. The team continues this season to strive for the best.
Rowing: Rowing is a sport that involves racing boats on a body of water, such as a river or lake. The boats are propelled by a team of rowers using oars. Rowing races can take place on a variety of courses, including long-distance races, sprints, and time trials. Jay Finney coaches such a spectacular and unique sport at Bothell’s boathouse, which makes for such a fun and enjoyable experience.
Track & Field: My personal favorite, and for that, the one I participate in, track and field is a collection of sports that includes running, jumping, and throwing events. This Olympic-level sport in Bothell High, coached by Mason McHenry and many others, has an incredibly big roster, and with that, eagerness to race, dominate, and have fun. With such a variety of events on the track or the field, this sport can have you huffing and puffing or launching objects in the distance. In that, I love doing both sprints and hurdles.
In conclusion, spring is an exciting time for sports enthusiasts, with a variety of popular sports to enjoy, including those I didn’t cover here. From the fast-paced action of soccer and lacrosse to the physical challenges of rowing and track and field, there is something for everyone to enjoy. So, grab your gear and get ready to hit the field, court, or water and start playing!
